Real-world conditions
Switch the country (VPN)
Make the device look like it is in another country, on the fly, to test regional prices, content and restrictions.
Why: a user from Kazakhstan says checkout shows the wrong price, and you are in the Netherlands. Switch the device to Kazakhstan and see exactly what they see.
What happens
Section titled “What happens”- The Network card shows the current country and the device’s public IP.
- Hover it to open the panel and pick another country under VPN location. The switch takes about a second; the app keeps running.
- Refresh the screen in the app and check what changed, for example the prices.
- To see what the server answered, open the request in DevTools.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- All of the device’s traffic goes through the chosen country: every app, and DNS lookups too, so nothing gives the real location away.
- The country is also picked in the launch dialog; the one you used last time is remembered.
- The VPN changes the IP address only. GPS, language and the time zone are separate: set them in their own cards if the app checks them (see GPS location and Language, time, theme and battery).
- Sessions on the same country share its IP address.
If it doesn’t work
Section titled “If it doesn’t work”- There is no VPN location in the panel: this Holtdroid has no VPN configured. Ask whoever runs it.
- The app still shows the old country: many apps detect the region once and remember it. Restart the app, or launch with a fresh install.
- The switch spins and fails: that location is unreachable right now. Pick another one or try again later.
